Artist Statement
“I have always been moved by the perception of beauty and fascinated by its expression - how the artist’s skill and imagination can both capture and transform visual experience. I try to work in a language that is intelligible to the sensitive viewer while exploring the boundaries between representational imagery and pure design."
Artist Bio
Anita Ingeborg Johnson is a native of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. At an early age she was influenced by the regional painters of the New Hope School and especially by Daniel Garber. She attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, studying classical painting techniques with the late Arthur De Costa (a student of Garber). She lived three years in Florence, Italy studying independently, focusing on landscape and also copying Old Master drawings and paintings at the Uffizi. She then studied three years in New Hampshire at the atelier of Boston School painter Paul Ingbretson, concentrating on the figure and principles of design. She also studied plein air landscape painting under the tutelage of noted Cape Ann painter David P. Curtis.
Her work has been widely exhibited in Italy and in the United States. She regularly exhibits at major galleries in Boston, on Cape Ann, and on Cape Cod and at such venues as the National Arts Club and the Salmagundi Club in New York City, the Academic Artists Association, and the Hudson Valley Artists Association.
A member of the Guild of Boston Artists, Rockport Art Association and North Shore Arts Association, she serves on the Board of Directors of the Guild of Boston Artists and as vice-president of the North Shore Arts Association. She has won numerous awards, including gold and silver medals.
A Note on Materials
All paintings are oil on linen canvas. The frames are 22k gold leaf, some hand-carved.
